Around 1959, I started listening to the Barbershop Harmony Society’s (SPEBSQSA) annual contest winners on vinyl records collected in the Great Neck, NY, public library. I learned to read music by studying trumpet for 10 years. All the while, my brother and I sang Gilbert and Sullivan operettas at home and harmonized with rock ‘n’ roll hits of the day. Singing accurately in close harmony requires a combination of individual assertion and a giving-up of self. I enjoy working hard to produce an enjoyable individual and ensemble sound.
